My Four Quadrant Approach to Creating Heaven on Earth

Something that I have conceived or defined in my own mind this week is my own personal notion of taking a Four Quadrant approach to Creating Heaven on Earth.

(For those who aren’t yet familiar with The Four Quadrants, we’ll define them on a unique page of Whole Life Whole World shortly, as they are and will be so key to a lot of our discussions, however, for now you can read about them on Wiki: (Four Quadrants)).

So I start with my Mind (The Upper Left Quadrant).  There has always been an understanding in authentic spiritual traditions that one must “get one’s own house in order first”, or as Gandhi similarly put it, “Can you be the change that you wish to see in the world?”.

So developing this area helps me to take those perspectives that may be neccessary to take an integral or “all-inclusive” approach, and also provides the base of inner strength and confidence to get things done and to try new things and new projects.

Then we know that to change the world ‘from the inside, out’ also requires the development and achievement of new Cultures; that we have an interior cultural shift together, so that’s the cultural aspect (The Lower Left Quadrant), and that’s also long been a focus for many of us.  I was speaking with Dr Neil Stanley just last night on changing cultures, in this instance, on making listening to the body and the importance of sleep for health culturally recognised.  Also in the areas of inner, personal and emotional cultural change, for example, this is one of the purposes of our work of Wisdom Coaching and Personal Integral Life Practice.

Then the right-hand quadrants get interesting.  By looking after and developing my Physical Body (The Upper Right Quadrant), that will provide the energy and fuel I need to get such things done.

“The way I run my body, and the things I put into my mouth, hugely influence my ability to be effective for myself, and for others.”

As the personal development speaker, Tony Robbins, points out, “Energy is The Fuel of Excellence”, so I am well aware that the way I run my body, and the things I put into my mouth, hugely influence my ability to be effective for myself, and for others.  So principles from his notes on ‘Vital Life’ have always been near the front of my mind.  This also benefits focus, clarity and effectiveness, as well as just ‘work rate’.  As Turner points out, a laser has relatively little power, but it is well focussed, and so it is hugely effective.

And then I personally have a particular keen focus at the moment on The Lower Right Quadrant – the physical or external collective; Social Systems. I don’t personally have the funds to build whole physical communities myself, so my efforts in this area are largely focussed around online social systems. What do we need to do to get things progressing from a social point of view? So in terms of media, communications, what websites will carry the necessary educational messages? How do we communicate with sufficient numbers of people? How will those people want and need to be able to communicate with each other in order to get things done? All this is why I’m particularly looking at social networking facilities, press release outreach practices, and forums.

This side is often overlooked by people wanting to impact change, but it needs to be done.  Not necessarily by everyone, but it’s a base that needs covering.  It’s been reported that in America alone, there are 30 million ‘Cultural Creatives’, who care, and wish to make a difference, but they don’t know that they are, they don’t know where everyone else is, and they don’t know what to do with their good intent, or how to get in touch with each other.

And whilst I’m not currently building literal physical communities, I can organise my immediate physical environment to make sure it is conducive to both relaxation, and effective, dynamic activity.  I choose positive and supportive company.  And I choose my locations for recreation to provide the best available opportunity for fresh air and communion with nature.

So now you have a glimpse into how I think, and the areas I focus on personally, from day to day in order to affect change.

Best wishes,

James Blacker
