Stu Mittleman’s Training Your Body To Burn Fat and Maximize Endurance

“The way that’s more empowering, the way that will put you in a position to create this limitless amount of energy, is to tap into this nearly infinite reservoir of stored energy known as fat… We want to get at the strategies to maximise your reliance on fat and move away from a dependence on sugar.” – Stu Mittleman

This understanding is going to be a cornerstone of our approach to listening to the body, mastering our physical body and maximizing our physical potential for strength, endurance and vitality throughout life…

It’s also right up there, in line with with our Strength for Life philosophy of “maximising whatever it is you have”.

Training your body to burn fat.

Training your body to burn fat.

Something that I’ve been wanting to see and find out more about, ever since I heard about it almost ten year’s ago, is marathon-running record holder, Stu Mittleman’s approach and teaching techniques for training your body to burn fat AND create greater endurance.

A video teaching of this, as given directly and personally by Mittleman, has just been published – freely available and accessible – on the Tony Robbins.com website, which you can reach via this link below.  We don’t know how long it will be there, so if you’ve any interest at all, you might want to check it out right now, or as soon as possible, as not all links at Tony Robbins.com stay up forever.

Training Your Body to Burn Fat, Maximize Health and Vitality, and Create Greater Energy and Maximum Endurance

The essence of the teaching is that there are two ways of creating energy – by burning fat, or by burning sugar, and that it gives us a slower – but more sustainable – release of energy by burning fat for energy.

Here are some of the main principles of the video teaching;

  • “The more gradually you ask your body to produce energy, the more likely it’s going to get it’s energy from fat, not sugar.”
  • “…so, low levels of activity; slight incremental increases in your effort level; slow, graudal increases in your heart rate will all do the trick.”
  • “Rename the warm-up the ‘Fat mobilization phase’.”
  • “The ‘Fat-mobilization’ may be the most important part.”

Mittleman also points out that burning sugar for energy gives the body a further toxic by-product of acid to deal with.

Also in line with our colleague, David Heard’s Strength for Life teaching, is again the debunking of the “no pain, no gain” myth.

As David has always pointed out, pain is the body’s signaling mechanism that tells us when something is wrong, so “no pain, no gain” was always going to be on a sticky wicket, and Mittleman also points this out very eloquently.

Mittleman further observes that the “grimacing, enduring” state shuts out, or shuts us down to much of the information being provided by the body, and also the outer physical surroundings.

So we are taught to increase our pulse rate and energy demands graudally and incrementally, in order to train our bodies to burn fat.

Further Principles

  • “Burning fat is tied to the process of alkalizing and pH balancing.”
  • “Once you start depleting the sugar [reserves], you’ll start to crave and need to replace the sugar, and then you’re battling your sugar cravings,… and finally the nervous system will take over and it will shut you down.”
